The Neighbourhood

Montmartre has long been known as one of Paris’ most romantic neighborhoods, set on the top of the Butte (the city’s highest hill), the area centres around the shining white dome of the sensational Sacré-Cœur church. Known as the birthplace of cubism and a favourite of Pablo Picasso, the whole area has a long association with art, as well as revolution as this was the location of the origin of the 1871 Paris Commune. Why not visit the Cimitière de Montmartre to enjoy a sombre yet beautiful green space and visit the grave of artists including Degas. Pigalle was once considered Paris’ epicentre for sleaze, with sex shops and peep shows on every street. Nowadays however, the area has transformed into a hipster centre with a more wholesome image, with cutting edge music clubs and chic cafes replacing the strip joints.
If you’re looking for a great place to enjoy a meal in Montmartre, then you are in for a treat as the area is filled with excellent eateries for all tastes and budgets. Bistro Poulbot is perhaps the best example of a traditional bistro in the area, serving classic French dishes. Le Chamarré Montmartre fuses traditional French with Mauritian cuisines for a fresh take on old classics. Le Moulin de Galette sits below one of only two surviving windmills in the Montmartre district, and has been the subject of paintings by Renoir and Picasso. Finally, Le Babalou is one of the best Italian pizza places in this part of Paris and serves delicious uncomplicated food.
For an evening drink, try La Divette de Montmartre for an authentic feel of the 1970s beatnik bars that populated the area. Away from the tourist crowds, Au Clair de Lune is an unpretentious favourite of locals to enjoy a quiet drink in relaxed surroundings and Le Supercoin is another example where the high quality of the drinks (in this case craft beer) is placed above the looks of the bar.
